About the F-01 Certificate of Fitness
The F-01 (Fire Guard for Impairment) authorizes you to maintain a fire watch when a building’s sprinkler, standpipe, or fire alarm system is out of service. Security guards, building superintendents, and construction workers often need it to legally perform fire watch duties in New York City. You earn the certificate by passing a written exam in person at FDNY headquarters, 9 MetroTech Center in Brooklyn.
What the F-01 exam covers
The exam is drawn from the FDNY’s F-01 study material and tests your knowledge of a fire guard’s duties during an impairment, including:
- Fire guard responsibilities and fire watch patrols
- Impairment procedures — what to do when a system is out of service
- Fire watch logbook and recordkeeping
- Emergency notification and the order of who to alert
- Fire protection systems: sprinklers, standpipes, and alarms
- Portable fire extinguisher use and classes
